Good Design is Good Business -TJ Watson Jr, IBM CEO 1966
It has been a bit since we last posted here. A lot has happened. At the time of our last post we were running a prototype with IDEO.org and entrepreneurs in Africa and Europe. Then I got married. Then we began working on a startup with some friends. We went from idea to operational company in less than a year. In July we stepped aside to make way for a capable new team to manage that business. Phew. What a year!
It’s a relief to not have the day to day pressure of a startup nipping at our heels, but of course, I get restless quickly. To help figure out what our next step is, I’ve decided to start a new project. I’m going to publish a podcast here on this blog.
With the podcast I want to look at the intersection of design and business, learning how other entrepreneurs apply design to their business, and sharing some of my own ideas about how design can help businesses.
What design is and how it works remains a mystery to most people. I want to do my part to try to explain it, to highlight people doing excellent design work and to help others bring design methods into their work. I’m not exactly sure where all this will go, but I’ve recorded a little prototype to get started, you will find it at the bottom of this post. Honestly I’m a bit embarrassed to release something unfinished like this, but that’s probably a good sign. Give it a listen. Let me know what you think.
Over the next couple months I’ll be in San Francisco, LA, New York, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Barcelona, (and on the internet!) talking with people about how they are successfully applying design to business. If you’ve got a story you want to share, I would love to hear from you: email alex at wedistill dot com.
